These are my personal projects. My work related projects I’m not linking here as many have since been rebuilt in different technologies, but over the last several years by name they include Boral’s Australian site and its collection of second brand sites, Woodsolutions, Dementia Australia, Commonwealth Games, the marriage equality vote info site, Queensland Family and Child Commission, University of NSW’s collection of websites, Travel Massive, KAS Australia, Freedom Road Travel, TfNSW open data site, Luna Park and quite a few others.

As I’m currently taking an extended break from paid work to refresh these, the projects listed below may be in a bit of an “under construction” status.

Photographic Dictionary

Photographic Dictionary is, as the name suggests, a collection of common words illustrated with photos. Like my other personal sites I stopped working on it when I had a day job and couldn’t give it the attention it deserved. Now with the rise of generative AI I want to clean up its Ruby on Rails backend and rewrite the front end into React and add a lot more content using generative AI. As a stretch goal I’d like to use the categorised collections of words to power some javascript word games to make the site a bit more interactive. This one used to get 1M pageviews a month at its peak, but is well below that currently.

Giraffian

Giraffian is an old site with various childen’s activities on it, but mostly has a collection of little kid’s jokes. Site dates back to 2002 and has been rebuilt in a variety of technologies over the years. Currently in the process of porting it from Drupal 7 to Backdrop after realising that Backdrop is, in fact, really good.

Stancartoons

Stancartoons is my father’s site, since he’s found Facebook he hasn’t been using this site much. Recently migrated from Drupal 6 to Wordpress.

Words, by Cat

Words, by cat is where the overflow from the Photographic Dictionary goes, if it has cats. I haven’t updated this one for ages but it’s now public on github if anyone has cat photos and wants to make a PR. Given I’m about to launch into using generative AI for the main site I suspect this one will resurrect at the same time with lots of completely unrealistic AI generated cat images.
